Open source แปลว่า

Open Source หมายถึง ซอฟท์แวร์หรือโปรแกรมที่ทางผู้ผลิตยินดีเปิดเผย Source Code ให้คนอื่นๆ สามารถนำไปใช้ประโยชน์ได้ตามที่ต้องการภายใต้เงื่อนไขที่ผู้ผลิตกำหนดไว้

ในทาง IT คำว่า Open Source นิยมใช้เรียก​โปรแกรมที่แจกให้ใช้ฟรี โดยคนทั่วไปจะหมายถึงการนำมาใช้งานได้ฟรี มากกว่าเรื่องการนำ Open Source เอง

ยุคแรกของคำว่า Open Source มักจะหมายถึงซอฟท์แวร์ระบบปฏิบัติการที่ไม่ต้องซื้อ License มาใช้ เช่น Linux รวมถึงซอฟท์แวร์ต่างๆ ที่ใช้ทำงานบนระบบปฏิบัติการ ก็จะนิยมใช้แบบ Open Source เช่น Open Office
